Frequently Asked Questions – Streaming & Patient Flow

How does streaming work?

Opto uses rule-based, locally configured logic to automatically stream patients within the ED front door to:

  • ED
  • UTC (co-located)
  • SDEC (co-located)

Streaming combines presenting complaint, risk flags, and configured criteria to support early direction to the right pathway.

Can patients be redirected after initial streaming?

Yes. Using the Opto Admin Panel, staff can re-direct patients between ED and UTC in real time. The triage record is then routed to the appropriate system:

  • SystmOne for UTC
  • CareFlow for ED

Can Opto stream patients outside the hospital (e.g. GP, Pharmacy)?

No. Opto does not automatically stream outside the organisation. It may suggest alternatives (e.g. Pharmacy First), but clinicians decide and communicate any redirection.

How are streaming rules managed?

  • Defined and agreed with the Trust
  • Aligned to local SOPs and pathways
  • Configurable without code changes
  • Subject to clinical governance and change control

How does Opto improve flow?

  • Earlier identification of patient need
  • Reduced variability in initial assessment
  • Faster, more consistent streaming
  • Better utilisation of co-located services (UTC/SDEC)
  • Improved operational visibility at the front door

What about languages?
